Into the Unknown

Edvard Grieg Kor participates in concert with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in the performance of Vaughan-Williams’ Sinfonia Antarctica.

The four movements of Britten’s “Sea Interludes” from Peter Grimes describe not only different aspects of the ocean, both in calm and storm, but also the complex psychological conditions presented in the opera.

Vaughan-Williams’ Four Last Songs are based on poems written by the composer’s wife, Ursula. All of them deal in some manner with the marital relationship, both in mythological and contemporary terms.

The Sinfonia Antarctica takes up the theme of Robert Scott’s dramatic, though ultimately unsuccessful expedition to reach the South Pole. The work portrays both the enormous obstacles Scott and his team faced, as well as the philosophical frame of mind which enabled them to push on.

The movements are interposed by texts which the composer included in the score, read by baritone soloist Roderick Williams.
